in july 2009 my cscs card was due to expire so as i usualy work with 3 more men i am normaly pointed out as superviser.
I decided to take the supervisers test which i passed i recieved a cert for my supervisers pass.
when i applyed for my card i was told that i could not have a supervisers card as i would have to have a nvq.
I believe that this is unfair, i had to buy a book a dvd and put more time into passing the test to be then told that i cant have a card for the test that i have passed.
I dont want to supervise 1000 men just the small team that i work with.
I believe that this is a oversite by the cscs people.
every team should have a superviser no matter what the trade, and that person should be compitant a card would show this.
Is there anyway this can be acheved without taking a nvq

Unfortunately only, if applying for a CSCS Card for the first time and have a Construction related NVQ or SNVQ, City & Guilds or other industry Qualification, may you be exempt and not have to take the Health and Safety Test and obtain a supervisors CSCS card.

Unlike years previous whereby you could once apply for a CSCS Card without any such prior qualifications, nowadays it really depends on your qualifications held they will dictate what CSCS Card you can apply for and further details on CSCS Cards and types available can be found here CSCS Cards

I recently done my scaffolding supervisors course(already scaffolder NVQ3) at Glasgow NCC. When my company applied for my card we were told that since my H&S test would be needing done again within the year, I’d have to redo it. Is there a specific H&S test I must do for the supervisors card?

    • safetymatters says:

      Hi Allan,
You may need to take the supervisors CSCS test or even the working at heights CSCS test as you’re a Scaffolder i’d suggest the supervisors test which you can easily book online here Book my CSCS Test trust that helps.

  • Pavel says:

    Hello.

I think I understand the questions in the evidence sheet and I might be interested in getting my supervisor’s card via this Profiled Route. How long is it going to take and how much do you charge for reviewing?

  • Richard says:

safetymatters :Alan, theres more to it that just completing the form ill email you the guidelines to help you out

Re your comment, safetymat, we would also be gratefull for this info

Hi I have also been looking at the Profiling route for CSM. I have downloaded the form & guidance notes from CSCS. Is their anything else I should be aware of as it seems to be a simple task of giving examples of how you meet the criteria having these checked & making the application.

  • mark g says:

  • Andy Cole says:

    Hi Alan

    Hi,

I am a former site manager, and am now working as an NVQ Assessor within the Construction sector. I have a Construction Management Degree gained from Bolton University in 1996. I am interested to see whether I could get my Level 4 Managers NVQ, through the profiling route. I already have a Level 3 Supervisors card. Thanks for your time, Steve.

  • Jonathan Lucas says:

please could you e-mail me the guidelines also not sure what the questions are asking for

  • phil roberts says:

here,s 1 for you then which is definately a massive gaping hole in the cscs/cpcs system. I was being assessed for my cpcs and cscs card from operative to supervisor, from red card to blue card, NVQ3 I believe. The initial interview, maths test and paperwork was completed on site, I sat and passed the supervisor h&s test but whilst waiting for the assessor to re visit site I went off sick from work. Whilst being unfit for work my cards expired and 2 years have now passed. I would like to return to work but cannot get a job due to having no valid cpcs/cscs cards. I cannot afford to pay for them myself due to being on benefits and I cannot get the free training as I am not employed. I could get a job as a basic site operative to obtain the free training but the nature of my health restricts my movement which also means I would get sacked the same day for not pulling my weight! Surely there is something that can be done but nobody wants to help me as there is nothing in it for them. Can you help or advise me?

  • Andy says:

    Hi

Im in the same situation as everyone could you please send me the guide lines to filling out the managers evidence sheet, many thanks.

  • simon w says:

Hi sorry to to trouble you but i am in a similar position as others i also have a hnc but this is not regarded as adequate but is on par with4/5 nvq s and think this is unfair and would appreciate the guidelines thanks

  • Simon Jeffery says:

    Hi,
I have been interested in how everyone is finding the profiled route complicated. I have a degree in Construction Management from 1994 and I then worked for a top main contractor in site management for 4 years. I then set up my own small building company where I managed barn conversions, extensions etc. Lately, I have obtained a position with a large contractor once more and am in need of a black managers cscs card. I believe I should be eligible for the profiled route. I would value your comments and would also be pleased if you could email me the guidlines.

    Many thanks. Simon Jeffery

  • simon j says:

    Hi,
I am also looking at using the profiled route to obtain a cscs site managers card. Could you please forward me the guidelines. Many thanks.

  • Mark S says:

    Hi

Like Simon I have an HNC and view it as extremely unfair like him how this cannot be recognised as adequate, albeit not focusing on management. I currently have a Trainee Technical/Management card which expires soon, this can be re-newed for a further 3 years however after this I would need to apply for a Black Card. I believe the only sensible option to obtain this card is the profiled route, therefore any guidlines would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in anticipation,

  • Allan Myles says:

I have requested a copy of the guidelines but, I did four years at College and acquired my City & Guilds Certificates. I was told on Wednesday by the CSCS that City & Guilds qualifications don’t help when applying for the Black Manager’s Card.

Does anyone know if this is actually the case? My Manager told me that he got his Black Card with his City & Guilds. He only had to acquire a copy of his certificates and confirmation that he did his apprenticeship in joinery.

I’m 56 and presently hold a Red Trainee Card. I’ve been contracts/site manager for the past twenty-five years. Help!!!!!

    Allan

  • Dave Ragan says:

sorry to bother you but could you send me the guide lines to help me get my black managers card thanks

  • anthony Jackson says:

I have site managers black card but it has expired can you tell me how to re apply to update it many thanks

  • Adam says:

    Hi.

I am a working site manager with an HNC in building tech and management.
I am now needing my black card and am thinking of going down the profiled route rather than the nvq way
I have 23 years experience in the industry worked through the ranks.
cscs will not recognize my quals and proven experience as was the case with a nebosh construction cert where I was made to take a smsts
Questions on the profiled route forms are not that difficult although I have read that there is a lot of failures.
I need some guidance through the profiled route and an assessor to sign the sheets off is this something that you could help me with.

hi ive worked as a self employed joiner/ ceiling fixer for over 20yrs i learn through grandfather rights ,so no nvq,s ect but work on construction sites doing everything from joiner to foreman ,supervisor to management and running my own jobs , how do i get a cscs black card , regards p.mcguire .

    • Peter,

In order to obtain a CSCS Black card you would need to gain the approriate level NVQ or if you are a Manager there is the profiled route but again you would need the right qualifications to support an application for a CSCS Card at that level.

      Does that help?

  • Paul says:

What can I do to be at least a supervisor with my experience. I have no nvq’s at all but did the old supervisors cscs tests.

  • Jim Millar says:

Hello, I am looking for some advice on how I can get my Gold Supervisors CSCS card and te cost .
I am a qualified Fitter / welder (City & Guilds cert in 1975 it is lost)
I have worked for the same company for 12 years stating as a Mechanical Fitter and after 3 years was promoted to Mechanical Supervisor for the last 9 years but I have only got the basic site operators cscs card this was not a problem until know as I might be getting made redundant I have done the supervisors H&S touch screen test each time since my promotion but the company never got me the Gold Supervisors CSCVS card, I have the confined space card, Plasma card, Slinger / signaler, SMSTS & first aid at work.
    Kind regards Jim

    • David Cant says:

Morning Jim. I believe you need to get a NVQ level 3 + in order to get a CSCS Supervisors card. however, a consultant will confirm the exact route you need to take and will be in touch in due course.

  • Kevin corner says:

I am now 46 between 16 and 20 I served an carpentry and joinery apprentishsip including block and day release at college. I contacted C&G to try to track down qualifications but no records existed? I have worked as a self employed foreman site agent /shopfitter since, becoming a limited company in 2002. I operate primarily as a sole trader. I have proof of my company including audited accounts can I get the short cut route to a black or gold cscs card. On another matter I paid 2% of my wages to CITB for well over 10 years can I get a discount on an smsts, asbestos awareness and any other new requirements that are required.
    Thanks
    Kev

    • David Cant says:

      Hi kevin.
unfortunately there are no discounts available for paying your 2% and there is no shortcut to the Black or Gold CSCS Card.

The options are down the NVQ route or the professional profiled route which is based on experience – both of which can be costly however there are Grants available, in certain circumstances. If this interests you let me know and i’ll send you the details.

  • Richard says:

Like many others on here i find myself having had 25 years in site management needing a black cscs managers card and my HNC and ICIOB are not recognised. I have decided to go down the profiled route and would appreciate a copy of the guidelines please.

  • Iain du Pon says:

    David,

Like so many of those commenting on you page unfortunately i am of the same predicament. Having a wealth of experience and knowledge and unable apparently to turn that into the expected answers for the CSCS profiled route, which is incredibly frustrating. I would be very grateful if you could send me through the guidance notes. Thanks again….

Hiya, I currently hold a black managers card under Grandfathers rights. Do I now have to get NVQ accreditation to renew it?
Fortunately I’ve got a couple of years until it expires …

    • David Cant says:

      Hi Mike.

I’m afraid so. In order to renew your CSCS card you will need to gain the relevant qualifications for the CSCS Card you require of which is a NVQ level 4,5 or construction related QCF level 6 or 7.

      Does that help?
