The HSE is to set out a new blueprint to include health and safety problems and provide solutions from the waste industry. The blueprint will include the tragic loss of life in the industry as well as poor health and injuries that are caused in the recycling and waste industry.  The blueprint is a result of a successful summit that was held in Solihull.

The summit had been arranged by the HSE and the WISH Forum. At the summit the senior parties from the industry met in order to tackle the health and safety issues and improve the health and safety record which is considered to be poor. The blueprint plan will be ready to be published by April and will include different sections such as:

  • Work involvement
  • Small business support
  • Safer and healthier workplaces
  • Competence
  • Leadership

Judith Hackitt the chair of the HSE held the keynote speech at the summit. She said that it was necessary for everyone to work together in order to make improvements to health and safety in the sector. The HSE cannot be expected to sort out all of the issues without the support and input from the industry as a whole.

Positive Response to the Summit

The reaction from those attending the summit has been good. John Skidmore, the president of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management said that the record of the industry wasn’t good. He believes the leaders in the industry for have to do something about it and that they have individual and collective responsibility. The GMB health and Safety representative Tony Ward said that the event was very constructive and useful. He praised the workshop session which was where health and safety approaches were discussed to raise awareness and stated that if one live could be saved from the summit then the whole day would be worthwhile.
